About Acupuncture

WHAT IS CHINESE MEDICINE?

Traditional Chinese medicine is a comprehensive system of health care with a continuous clinical tradition of over 3,000 years. It includes acupuncture and herbal treatment as well as Tui-na (massage), dietary therapy, meditation and exercise. These therapies work with the natural vital energies inherent within all living things to promote the body’s ability to heal itself. The treatment is directed toward the root of disease, rather than treating only symptoms as they arise. This results in healing that reaches a much deeper level, and is free of side effects.

IS ACUPUNCTURE SAFE?

Acupuncture is performed using only sterile stainless steel needles which are disposed of after each use. Points along the body are selected, and needles are gently inserted for the purpose of restoring the balance and free flow of Qi (pronounced Chee), or vital energy, within the body. By regulating and smoothing the flow of Qi, circulation is improved, pain is reduced, and general energy level is balanced. This results in increased energy, reduction in pain, and more stable emotions. An over-all sense of well-being is often reported with acupuncture therapy.

IS ACUPUNCTURE PAINFUL?

Acupuncture needles are significantly finer than hypodermic needles, finer than even hair. Most patients find the treatment very relaxing and experience a feeling of tranquility. Many patients report they do not feel the needle enter the skin.
